Q: How to connect a DNA cousin to your family tree?
A: The recommended practice would be to extend the family tree from the DNA cousin onwards till you can connect it to an existing person in your family tree
Step 1:
Use the "Search" feature (by clicking on the loupe icon) to find your DNA cousin. Select the DNA cousin among the search results returned and click on any of the triangulated groups he or she is in:
Step 2:
You're now on the "Discuss" page where you can select the DNA cousin under the "Smart Tree" submenu which will display your DNA cousin's family tree:
Step 3:
With the family tree of the DNA cousin now being displayed, it's easiest to extend the family tree by clicking either on "F" (for father) or "M" (for mother):
and fill out the corresponding information:
Step 4:
Repeat this process until you come to a point where the corresponding parent is already in your family tree. Rather than filling out the details and clicking save (which will create a new person!), you can now click on the green "Search" button and select either "People I created" or "People my matches created" (this is the correct option if you know that another genealogists has already created the person under his/her family tree):
Alternative method:
You can also add descendants from the last known person in your family tree until you come to the DNA cousin. However, in many cases the app has already created a family tree tile for your DNA cousin automatically (under your family tree but still unconnected). So even when you didn't explicitly created that family tree tile there's a high chance it exists due to some previous actions/clicks that you did in the app.
When adding a DNA cousin by clicking on the "C" icon in their parents family tree tile you should select the "DNA cousin" option. Keep in mind that there will be an error if the DNA cousin is already assigned to a family tree tile, that's why we recommend to start with the DNA cousin and work upwards instead.
